Reflections 3 on Research Design and Methodological Framework

I chose Saunders’ Research Onion (https://thesismind.com/analysis-of-saunders-research-onion/) not as a rigid formula, but as a flexible framework that allowed me to critically examine each layer of my methodology — from philosophical assumptions to data collection techniques.

The model encouraged me to critically reflect on my epistemological stance. Instead of jumping to methods, I first asked: What counts as knowledge in my research? This shifted my approach from merely finding answers to questioning how those answers are constructed.

While the Research Onion is often read as a linear guide, I approached it as a non-linear tool, allowing for iteration between layers.

For example, during early interventions, obtaining feedback from stakeholders helped me revise my initial assumptions. Through multiple iterations of testing and refinement, I was able to move closer to an objective understanding of the research subject. In this process, I found that the insights gained from early fieldwork prompted me to reassess and improve my methodological choices — demonstrating that flexibility is more valuable than rigid adherence.

Compared to other frameworks, such as Creswell’s five approaches or the mixed methods matrix proposed by Tashakkori and Teddlie, Saunders’ Research Onion provided a more visually intuitive and layered structure that aligned with the evolving, abductive nature of my research. However, I remained cautious not to let the model dictate my process but instead used it as a reflexive guide.

In conclusion, while Saunders’ Research Onion helped me navigate the complexities of methodological design in a structured way, I remain aware of its limitations. Like all models, it simplifies a messy reality. Therefore, I treated it as a dialogic tool — not a final answer, but a starting point for asking better methodological questions.
