Reflections 1 on Research Design and Methodological Framework

Why choose Interpretivism?
Interpretivism emphasizes the construction of meaning in human behavior. It argues that social reality is not an objective entity to be “discovered,” but one that is continuously “constructed” through language, communication, and cultural interaction. This philosophical position is directly aligned with my research topic: “How intangible cultural heritage (ICH) stimulates fashion identity.” My research concerns cultural identity, authenticity, and traditional craftsmanship — all of which are subjective meanings interpreted by people, rather than measurable, objective phenomena.

Interpretivism?

Why choose the Abductive approach?
Abduction is often used in exploratory research and emphasizes understanding phenomena by developing the “most plausible explanations.” This approach allows me to explore the dynamic relationship between brand practices and ethnic culture, continuously refining my theoretical framework through experimentation and feedback.
Abduction is particularly useful when moving back and forth between existing theories and real-world observations, especially in addressing complex, polysemous cultural phenomena. Unlike deduction (which starts with theory) or induction (which starts with data), abduction enables a more flexible movement between theory and practice.
My research investigates “how ICH is translated into the language of fashion,” involving artistic expression, contextual interpretation, and cultural meaning-making — which cannot be predetermined by fixed rules. The abductive method allows me to generate theoretical insights from real-world observations (such as the cultural strategies of Dior and Loewe), rather than force-fitting an existing theory.

Abductive approach?

Why choose Action Research and Intervention?
Action research involves the researcher entering real-world contexts and collaboratively exploring and reflecting with participants. This method is particularly suitable for:

  • Driving actual change in communities (e.g., cultural preservation and fashion innovation),
  • Exploring problems through practice rather than pure observation,
  • Treating research subjects not merely as “analyzed objects” but as co-creators of knowledge.

Intervention refers to my active involvement — such as organizing workshops, co-producing visual content, or participating in product development.
For instance, my dialogues with artisans in Chengdu represent a typical intervention: I do not merely observe them but engage in the collaborative visual reinterpretation of culture, enabling a deeper understanding of the practical values embedded in ICH.
Through action research, I move beyond the surface-level study of ICH techniques and, by interacting and co-creating with local craftspeople, gain insights into the underlying cultural logic. This interventionist practice transforms me from a passive observer into a collaborative explorer, facilitating richer, more grounded insights.

Action research

Action research

Conclusion
Through this methodological reflection, I realized that research is not an isolated accumulation of knowledge but a generative process deeply entangled with context, others, and practice. The layered structure of the Saunders Research Onion provided me with a coherent logic that connects my research problem with methodological choices — ensuring not only theoretical consistency but also practical relevance and transformative potential.
